Endangered Shops

We hear a little about endangered animal species, but even less about endangered types of shops.

In this issue we carry an advertisement for yet another art and framing shop closing down.  This means that in the whole of northern Sandton, you have to travel to Morning Glen Mall to get your picture framing done or buy a painting.

Florists appear to be a gradually dying breed.  There are still several in various centres, but the only new one to open recently is Rosy Posy.

Corner greengrocers have long been replaced by supermarkets.  The only butchers that haven't disappeared are in the smaller centres: Sandton Butchery in Petervale Shopping Centre (where they are the supermarket) and Morningside Butchery in Wendywood Shopping Centre (competition: a KwikSpar), who survive by offering quality products with personal service.

On the other hand, fast food, nail bars, hair salons, and expensive ladies' clothing shops seem to be able to survive in almost every centre.

I wonder what this says about us?  We (or the ladies, anyway) are adorning ourselves, but not our homes...

Restaurant Review by Judith Back to top

***** Senza, Petervale Shopping Centre, off Cambridge Road

The new kids on the block!  Went there for coffee in the morning and suggested we return for lunch. The coffee was great and the breakfast menu looked really good.  If you like early business meetings, this could well be the place to meet.

We did go for lunch and were blown away by the service and the management!  Great wine list and  a lunch menu which just increased my desire to eat!  Such exciting combinations of herbs and other things - failed to ask for the dinner menu.

This is a really different place to eat at and their menu has star rankings for me.  We ordered Salmon fish cakes with cabbage and fennel salad plus the Senza burger with crispy chips.  The fennel was a bit shy in the cabbage salad but we were thanked for drawing attention to this.  The fish cakes were excellent and the burger simply magnificent with really crispy chips!

I can recommend the Wildekrans Chenin Blanc - hadn't come across it before but it is a really good wine.

Service is five star and their lower level can be booked for parties - there is a bar down there as well.  This is a restaurant that deserves to go far!

Curry Favour with the Democratic Alliance on Friday 12 April!

Come and join DA Ward 109 to learn to cook curry on a Friday evening. Everyone enjoyed themselves immensely last year. First we learn to cook Indian style, then we eat the magnificent food.  As a bonus you will get 30 recipes to take home.  The cost of the evening (excluding drinks) is R250 and the venue is Karma Restaurant, Greenside.  We have only 26 places, so early booking is essential:  Please book with Neil Whysall, e-mail whybros@mweb.co.za or phone 083 652 2640.

Green Spot: Paper and Cardboard Collection

Recycling helps our environment by reducing the need for landfill, and in the process creates jobs for your fellow Africans. Mpact Recycling (formerly Mondi Recycling) will collect clean waste paper and flattened cardboard boxes from your gate every week, for free.  In the Morningside area the collection day is Tuesday (except for public holidays and the end-of-year break); for other areas phone 011 538 8600, or look out for the day your neighbours put out their bright orange "Ronnie Bag".  No plastic, polystyrene, waxed cartons, dirty containers, food wrappings, or tissues, please.
