Spotlight on Chilli Lane Shopping Centre, Sunninghill

Our visit to Chilli Lane was long overdue, as you will see from the long new and closed shop lists below.

Chilli Lane is one of the newest and largest centres in Sunninghill, on the northern extension of Rivonia Road.  As with many successful centres, it focuses on (and gives an unrivalled view of) the open-air car park. Meanwhile ignoring the more scenic Sandspruit and the real park behind the centre.

In Chilli Lane you will find branches of some of your favourite restaurants – Doppio Zero, Ocean Basket, and Nandos.

You will also find an unusual one: Moja Cafe. Started in Orlando East, Soweto, Moja has since May had a branch in the North. You can get typical African dishes like phutu with amasi, chicken feet, wors & pap with morogo there. They have the famous "kota", half sheep's head, beef tripe, and pork trotters.  Those who moved up from ekasi should feel right at home on the upper level of Chilli Lane, up the stairs outside Spec Savers.

There are a Woolworths Food and a Pick n Pay, well separated so that they don't fight. Also Clicks as well as Sorbet Salon, Candi & Co and Old Town Barbershop. The Centre is now home to two major banks (FNB and Capitec) and has a Nedbank ATM. The fully-equipped Virgin Active gym has a swimming pool, internet café and juice bar. Still on the sport and fitness theme, Rank1 Nutrition stocks gym and sports nutrition supplies.

An interesting addition is Candyfloss Sugaring Boutique.  They use a technique, new to South Africa, involving sugar for hair removal.  They say it is less painful than waxing. There are also other beauty processes including Yoni steaming and the Vajacial (better ask them what that is).  For those of us who are going bald, hair removal is the opposite of what we want!

Related, but on the other side of Rivonia Road, is the newer and smaller extension, Chilli on Top,

Context is Important!

"Darling, I missed you!", she cried

...and aimed another shot.

Do You Use Excel?  Making Mistakes is Easy!

Finding errors is hard! But they can kill your company! In 2012, a London Olympics employee accidentally typed in “20,000” instead of “10,000". The Olympic Committee then sold 10,000 tickets for non-existent seats at minor events. They had to upgrade them to major events —at a loss. Get this FREE report on preventing Excel mistakes..

“I’m every woman” from the eponymous song sung by Whitney Houston.

Running Out of Names

It has been clear for a while that the pharmaceutical industry has run out of sensible names for their products.  "Dezzolip" sounds more like a drain cleaner than a statin.  Who would voluntarily take Palexia or Silrexia, which sound like the evil half-sisters of sweet little Anorexia?

Having run out of names, some companies resort to numbers, such as ACC 200: It gives no clue as to what it does!  If, indeed, it does anything.

Whatever became of functional names like Vaporub, Elastoplast and Stopayne?  All copyrighted, of course.

But now the malaise has hit the car industry too.

A "venue" is the place where an event or meeting is happening.  Venues do no move.  They are static, fixed in one place.  You would be most alarmed if the venue where you had gone to watch a play or your favourite pop star, were to shift its position.  But now the bright sparks at Hyundai have named one of their models a "Venue".  Perhaps the South Koreans are just bad at English?

Or maybe this is the start of a trend?  Keep a lookout for the soon-to-be-released Kia Static, the Toyota Immobile, and the GWM Fortress.

(Deliberately?) Misattributed Quotes

(If they didn't really say it, they should have!)
